The establishment of a war crimes court in Liberia is not just about justice—it’s about healing our nation’s wounds and preventing future conflicts. As someone who witnessed the impact of our civil wars, I firmly believe that true reconciliation requires accountability. The victims and survivors of atrocities deserve to see justice served, and our society needs this crucial step to move forward.
While some argue that we should “let sleeping dogs lie,” the unaddressed traumas of our past continue to affect our present. The recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) remain largely unimplemented, leaving many Liberians waiting for closure. A war crimes court would demonstrate our commitment to justice and human rights while strengthening our democratic institutions.
The international community has shown willingness to support this initiative, but the political will must come from within. By establishing a war crimes court, we can send a clear message that Liberia stands for justice and accountability. This process, though challenging, is essential for building a stronger, more unified Liberia where the rule of law prevails.
